Found materials, national symbols and the artist’s own body become tools for examining power and freedom of expression in Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara’s work. The Cuban visual and performance artist discusses his practice Saturday, October 24 at Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art and Design, located in the Freedom Tower in Downtown Miami. Born in Havana, Otero Alcántara is a self-taught artist and human rights activist whose practice spans performance, drawing, painting, sculpture and interventions in public space. His work examines the relationship between art, politics and everyday life in contemporary Cuba. Works by the artist are currently on view at the museum. The talk will be conducted in Spanish. Admission is free and open to the public, with complimentary parking for attendees in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.
