Old worlds end and new worlds fight to be born in the fault lines of past eras – how does truth seep in as politics change and regimes shift? Clayre Benzadón’s Moon as Salted Lemon brings together sex, the queer body, Sephardic Jewish identity, and myriad other historical topics to present an experimental, expansive, and poetical documentation of the life of Spanish Jews. Asa Drake’s debut Maybe the Body: Poems plumbs the tension between art and patriotism, the Philippines and the American South, in a lush, multigenerational conversation between daughters, mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. Party Line: Poems is Kyle Carrero Lopez’s electrifying debut on US-Cuba relations, the embargo, and how much power countries wield over their people, in deft political poetry that both humors and does not look away from hard truths. And in Hera Naguib’s Rupture Anthem, the speaker confronts the aftermath of America’s War on Terror, the startling dissonance of feeling lost in your own country, and the arduous search for freedom and self across multiple continents.
