Visitors reshape a monumental three-screen installation through their movement and attention in Pérez Art Museum Miami’s first artist-driven AI exhibition. Opening Saturday, November 21 and on view through May 4, 2027, Techno Firma by John Fitzgerald and Godfrey Reggio explores how humanity’s increasing dependence on technology is affecting the planet and contemporary life. The installation reimagines Reggio’s influential 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi using a custom machine learning model created by Fitzgerald and trained on the Reggio Foundation Archive. Images of natural landscapes, cities and industrial sites unfold across a large obelisk as computer vision sensors respond to the movement, number and attention of visitors, altering imagery and soundscapes in real time. Set against Miami’s growing technology sector, the work engages questions surrounding climate change, surveillance, data centers and employment while asking how artificial intelligence is changing people’s relationship with the world around them
