State of lush tropics and subtropics, gators, many-hurricaned coasts and land of endless summers: what does it mean to write Florida? P. Scott Cunningham’s Self-Portrait as the “i” in Florida blends both spectacle and the routine of daily life in a panoramic and deeply personal examination of the moments that define a life. All Roads Lead to Here by Carolina Hospital is a journey of displacement and returning to the sea set against a natural backdrop of illness, exile, and, at last, homecoming. Organ Language by Jen Karetnick makes music its center, using the rich language of flora and her surreal humor, while Domiciliary is the product of a unique writing challenge to pen 26 beautiful outlaws and 26 abecedarians, one for each letter of the alphabet. In Quick Change Artist, Julie Marie Wade confronts mortality and aging with her characteristic quick wit and tendency to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
