Popcorn Theology DANGERS OF DOGMA AND DOMINIONISM “We will conquer this wilderness. It will not consume us.” New England, 1630. A family is cast out of the plantation because of the father’s pride, and they build a farm at the edge of a forest they were told to conquer. Then the baby vanishes. The crops rot. And a family taught that the world is a battlefield between the elect and the damned begins looking for the damned inside its own house. The Witch is the scariest film in this series because the monster in the woods does less damage than the theology in the home. This is what dogma does when it is enmeshed in dominion. A faith built on fear of the wilderness, fear of the body, fear of a girl becoming a woman, must eventually find someone to burn. On the Sunday before Halloween, we will name the theologies still running that script in our own century, and we will do what our tradition has learned to do with the word witch. We will hand it back to the people it was used against, and call it holy. Join us live in the sanctuary or Live Stream on our YouTube Channel ( https://www.youtube.com/@uucmiami ).
