Rock of Ages

Big guitars, ’80s rock anthems and Sunset Strip excess drive this jukebox musical presented as part of Actors’ Playhouse’s Mainstage season at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables. Running Wednesday through Sunday from March 17 through April 11, Rock of Ages follows aspiring rocker Drew and small-town newcomer Sherrie as their paths cross at a legendary Los Angeles music club threatened by redevelopment. Written by Chris D’Arienzo, with arrangements and orchestrations by Ethan Popp, the five-time Tony Award-nominated musical builds its story around songs associated with the glam metal and arena-rock era. The score includes “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “I Wanna Know What Love Is,” “Here I Go Again” and “Don’t Stop Believin’,” combining the music with comedy and a send-up of 1980s rock culture. Thursday performances include a pre-show happy hour at the Bacardi Bar, while the Friday, March 26 performance is followed by a Q&A with the cast and director. The Sunday, April 11 matinee offers audio description for audience members who are blind or have low vision.
