Expansive orchestral writing, choral forces and mezzo-soprano solo voice shape a full-evening performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. The Frost Symphony Orchestra performs the work Saturday, November 14 at Gusman Concert Hall as part of the Frost School of Music’s 2026-2027 season. Conducted by Gerard Schwarz, the concert features vocal soloist Robynne Redmon. Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor is often regarded as the longest symphony in the standard orchestral repertoire. Spanning six movements in two parts, the work opens with a vast first movement before moving through contrasting sections that evoke nature, stillness, human feeling and spiritual reflection. Mahler once described the piece as “A Summer’s Midday Dream,” a phrase that points to the symphony’s scale and its connection to the natural world. The performance calls for an extensive ensemble, including orchestra, women’s chorus, children’s chorus and mezzo-soprano soloist, making it one of Mahler’s most ambitious works.
