Cuban folklore and interactive theater converge in a supernatural horror story that gives audiences a hand in determining what unfolds onstage. Presented Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 at Inkub8 Studio in Little Haiti, La Botánica follows Carmen, a mother whose rejection of her son triggers a haunting chain of events inside a botánica, or spiritual shop. Written by Alex Gonzalez and Gian Arellano and presented by Latiné Theater Lab, the production invites audience members to choose which scenes are performed and influence how the story ends. The 90-minute play is performed without intermission and incorporates themes of trauma, grief, religion and mental illness. Performances take place Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 and 8 p.m. Recommended for ages 16 and older, the production includes strobe lighting, smoke, scents, loud noises, graphic imagery and periods of complete darkness. Advance tickets are $25, with a limited number of $15 tickets available for each performance.
