Latin jazz traditions come into focus through student performances shaped by rhythm, improvisation and ensemble interplay. The FIU Latin Jazz Concert takes place Monday, November 16 and Monday, April 12 at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center as part of the FIU Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts 2026-2027 season. Directed by Dr. Michael Eckroth, the concert features the FIU Latin Jazz Ensemble performing works by influential Latin jazz composers alongside original arrangements. The program draws on Afro-Caribbean, South American and North American musical traditions, with driving percussion and improvisation central to the ensemble’s sound. The performance offers audiences a look at FIU’s student musicians working within a genre that connects jazz language with a broad range of Latin American and Caribbean rhythmic practices.
