Stories, objects and the act of reading come together in an exhibition exploring how people cross cultures and perspectives through narrative at Miami Dade College’s Hialeah Campus Art Gallery. Dokusho no Aki: A Thousand Gates Beneath One Moon opens Wednesday, September 16, and remains on view through December 4, drawing inspiration from the Japanese idea of dokusho no aki, or autumn as a season for reading. Curated by Isabela Villanueva, the exhibition brings together artifacts from different parts of the world as points of entry into stories, histories and experiences beyond one’s own. The project considers each object as a kind of threshold, connecting otherwise distant cultures through storytelling and reflection. Concept and programming are by MDC professors Rodney Castillo and Victor Calderin. Throughout the exhibition, Thursday gallery hours offer visitors a quieter setting to explore the works, bring a book or spend time reading and reflecting in the space.
