Join us for a presentation exploring what motivates citizens to take part in local decision-making. Drawing on survey experiments, focus groups and interviews conducted in Milan, Italy, this research examines how the design of public forums can encourage—or discourage—civic participation. How much does having real decision-making power matter? Are people more likely to participate online or in person? The findings reveal important tradeoffs between accessibility and active engagement and offer new insights into how governments can foster more meaningful public participation.
